CVE-2026-107833: CWE-674: Uncontrolled Recursion in corazawaf coraza
Description
OWASP Coraza WAF is a golang modsecurity compatible web application firewall library. From 3.0.0 until 3.8.0, ProcessResponse in internal/bodyprocessors/json.go passes the ignoreJSONRecursionLimit value of -1 to readJSON, while the recursive guard only stops at zero. A network attacker who can cause an application protected by Coraza to return deeply nested JSON can make response-body processing perform quadratic work, consuming one CPU core for seconds per response within the default ResponseBodyLimit. Request JSON processing is not affected by this specific path because it uses the configured request recursion limit, and exploitation requires response-body inspection to be enabled. This issue is fixed in version 3.8.0.

Technical Analysis
OWASP Coraza WAF, a golang modsecurity compatible web application firewall library, has an uncontrolled recursion vulnerability in its response-body JSON processing from versions 3.0.0 up to but not including 3.8.0. The ProcessResponse function passes an ignoreJSONRecursionLimit value of -1 to readJSON, but the recursive guard only stops at zero, allowing deeply nested JSON responses to cause quadratic CPU work during response-body processing. This can consume one CPU core for seconds per response within the default ResponseBodyLimit. Request JSON processing is unaffected because it uses a configured recursion limit. Exploitation requires response-body inspection to be enabled. The issue is fixed in version 3.8.0.
Potential Impact
An attacker able to cause an application protected by Coraza WAF to return deeply nested JSON responses can trigger excessive CPU usage during response-body processing, potentially degrading performance or causing denial of service conditions on the affected system. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity, and no known exploits in the wild.
Mitigation Recommendations
Upgrade Coraza WAF to version 3.8.0 or later, where this uncontrolled recursion vulnerability in response-body JSON processing is fixed. If upgrading is not immediately possible, consider disabling response-body inspection to avoid triggering this issue, noting that this may reduce security coverage. Patch status is confirmed fixed in 3.8.0.
