Product: CUPS

Description

CVE-2026-107886 is a low severity double-free vulnerability in OpenPrinting CUPS versions from 1.4.8 up to but not including 2.4.20. It occurs in printer-class management when modifying class members, leading to a dangling pointer that can be freed twice. This flaw can cause a denial of service affecting the scheduler. Exploitation requires a client with SYSTEM-level privileges to modify and delete classes.

Technical Analysis

OpenPrinting CUPS before version 2.4.20 contains a double-free vulnerability in the printer-class management functionality. Specifically, when the CUPS-Add-Modify-Class operation replaces an existing class member list, the function add_class() frees the pclass->printers pointer without clearing it. If subsequent validation fails, the class retains a dangling pointer, which is freed again later by CUPS-Delete-Class in cupsdDeletePrinter(). This double-free can lead to a denial of service affecting the entire scheduler. The vulnerability requires a client authorized with SYSTEM privileges to modify and delete classes.

Potential Impact

An attacker with SYSTEM-level privileges authorized to modify and delete printer classes can cause a denial of service affecting the CUPS scheduler by triggering a double-free condition. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity. The CVSS score is low (2.3) reflecting limited impact and high privilege requirements.

Mitigation Recommendations

No explicit patch information is provided. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, restrict SYSTEM-level privileges to trusted users only to prevent exploitation.
