Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Red Hat
Product: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10

Description

A use-after-free flaw was found in mutter in the Wayland color-management ICC image-description path. A local attacker who can run a malicious Wayland client can destroy a wp_image_description_v1 resource while an asynchronous ICC file read is still in progress. When the read completes, the compositor uses the freed wl_resource, writes into freed memory, and frees a pointer derived from that memory. This can crash the GNOME session and may allow arbitrary code execution within the compositor process.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability involves a use-after-free condition in mutter's handling of Wayland color-management ICC image descriptions. The flaw occurs when a malicious local Wayland client destroys a wp_image_description_v1 resource during an asynchronous ICC file read. Upon completion of the read, the compositor accesses and modifies freed memory, which can cause a crash and may allow execution of arbitrary code in the compositor process. The issue affects Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 and has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 7.8, indicating high severity.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation can crash the GNOME session and potentially allow a local attacker to execute arbitrary code within the compositor process. This could lead to privilege escalation or compromise of the graphical session on affected systems.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the Red Hat advisory at https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-108094 for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, restrict local access to trusted users to mitigate risk.
