Technical Analysis
This vulnerability (CWE-640) involves a weak password recovery mechanism in Hitachi Vantara Remot Ops Agent. An administrator can retrieve password reset codes for any user through an API output, enabling them to reset passwords and take over accounts. The API is accessible only to administrator accounts, meaning an attacker must already have administrative privileges to exploit this issue. The vulnerability affects versions from 1.6.0 up to and including 2.0. Device credentials and customer data remain protected from this vulnerability.
Potential Impact
An attacker with administrative access to the application can compromise other user accounts by retrieving password reset codes and resetting passwords. However, this vulnerability does not expose device credentials or customer data. The impact is limited to credential compromise within the application accounts.
Mitigation Recommendations
No patch or official fix information is provided. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, restrict administrative access to trusted personnel only to prevent exploitation.
