Vendor/Project: IDRIX
Product: VeraCrypt

Description

VeraCrypt 1.26.29 (FUSE-T build) on macOS has an incomplete cleanup vulnerability where auxiliary services and helper processes remain active after volume dismount. This allows local users or processes to access decrypted data without re-entering the passphrase by remounting the stale auxiliary mount or reopening recent paths. The macFUSE build is not affected.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-108982 describes an incomplete cleanup issue (CWE-459) in VeraCrypt version 1.26.29 FUSE-T build on macOS. When a volume is dismounted, VeraCrypt fails to terminate the FUSE-T auxiliary service (go-nfsv4) and associated core-service helper processes. These leaked processes continue to serve the decrypted volume image over a loopback SMB session and retain open handles to the raw device. Consequently, a local user or process can remount and access the decrypted volume without requiring the passphrase by reopening previously accessed paths or attaching the volume image from the stale auxiliary mount. The macFUSE build of VeraCrypt is not affected by this vulnerability.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows local users or processes to bypass the passphrase requirement and access decrypted volume data after VeraCrypt reports the volume as dismounted. This exposure of decrypted data can lead to unauthorized data access on affected systems running the FUSE-T build of VeraCrypt 1.26.29 on macOS.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, users should avoid using the FUSE-T build of VeraCrypt 1.26.29 on macOS or ensure that auxiliary services are fully terminated after dismounting volumes. Using the macFUSE build, which is not affected, is a safer alternative.
