Published: 10/12/2026 (10/12/2026, 18:31:48 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: vllm-project
Product: vllm

Description

CVE-2026-109311 is a high-severity vulnerability in vllm versions before 0.29.0. It involves improper input validation where uploaded audio files are passed to FFmpeg's av.open() fallback with only a file-size check. This exposes the FFmpeg IAMF parser to a heap overflow, allowing authenticated remote attackers to crash the API process by uploading malformed IAMF containers repeatedly.

Technical Analysis

vLLM versions prior to 0.29.0 improperly validate input by only checking the file size of uploaded audio files before passing them to the PyAV/FFmpeg av.open() fallback. This leads to exposure of a heap overflow vulnerability in FFmpeg's IAMF parser. Authenticated remote attackers can exploit this by repeatedly uploading malformed IAMF containers to the /v1/audio/transcriptions endpoint, causing heap corruption and crashing the API process.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows authenticated remote attackers to cause a denial of service by crashing the API process through heap corruption. There is no indication of privilege escalation, code execution, or data disclosure from the provided information.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in vllm version 0.29.0 and later. Users should upgrade to version 0.29.0 or newer to remediate this vulnerability. No vendor advisory content was provided to indicate alternative mitigations or temporary fixes.
