Published: 10/12/2026 (10/12/2026, 18:31:53 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: edgelesssys
Product: contrast

Description

Edgeless Systems Contrast versions 1.8.0 up to but not including 1.24.1 have a vulnerability where the node installer sets the containerd configuration file permissions to world-writable (0666). This misconfiguration allows local unprivileged users on the node to modify the containerd config, potentially overwriting critical settings such as the runc location, which can lead to privilege escalation.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-109358 describes an incorrect permission assignment vulnerability in Edgeless Systems Contrast. Specifically, the node installer writes the containerd configuration file with world-writable permissions (0666), allowing local unprivileged users to modify the configuration. This can be exploited to overwrite the runc binary location, enabling privilege escalation on the affected system. The vulnerability affects versions from 1.8.0 up to but not including 1.24.1.

Potential Impact

Local unprivileged users on the node can modify the containerd configuration file due to overly permissive file permissions. This can lead to privilege escalation by changing critical runtime parameters such as the runc binary location, potentially compromising the host system's security.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in Edgeless Systems Contrast version 1.24.1 and later. Users should upgrade to version 1.24.1 or newer to remediate this vulnerability. Until upgraded, restrict local access to trusted users only to reduce risk.
