Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: cozmoslabs
Product: User Profile Builder – Beautiful User Registration Forms, User Profiles & User Role Editor

Description

The User Profile Builder – Beautiful User Registration Forms, User Profiles & User Role Editor plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Privilege Escalation in all versions up to, and including, 4.0.3 via the `role` parameter handled by the `wppb_add_meta_to_user_on_activation()` function. The vulnerability exists because the activation handler passes the attacker-supplied role value directly to `WP_User::set_role()` with no allow-list validation, and the 4.0.3 reserved-name check exempts pre-existing form fields from the block, allowing a legacy field with meta-name `role` to persist and bridge attacker-controlled request input into the serialized signup record stored in `wp_signups`. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to gain a fully activated WordPress administrator account by submitting `role=administrator` through the public `[wppb-register]` shortcode form and subsequently clicking the confirmation activation link. Exploitation requires the site to have a legacy form field with meta-name `role` carried over from before the 4.0.3 upgrade, email confirmation enabled, and open user registration — all stable site-state conditions once established.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-109447 describes a privilege escalation vulnerability in the User Profile Builder – Beautiful User Registration Forms, User Profiles & User Role Editor WordPress plugin, affecting all versions up to and including 4.0.3. The issue arises because the activation handler function 'wppb_add_meta_to_user_on_activation()' passes the attacker-controlled 'role' parameter directly to 'WP_User::set_role()' without allow-list validation. The plugin's reserved-name check in version 4.0.3 exempts pre-existing form fields, allowing a legacy 'role' meta-name field to persist. This enables an unauthenticated attacker to register with 'role=administrator' via the public '[wppb-register]' shortcode form and gain a fully activated administrator account after confirming the registration email. Exploitation depends on the presence of a legacy 'role' field, enabled email confirmation, and open user registration on the site.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation results in an unauthenticated attacker gaining full administrator privileges on the affected WordPress site. This compromises confidentiality, integrity, and availability, allowing complete control over the site. The CVSS v3.1 base score is 8.1 (High), reflecting network attack vector, high complexity, no privileges required, no user interaction, and full impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or fix is currently documented. Site administrators should verify if their installation includes a legacy 'role' form field and consider disabling open user registration or email confirmation temporarily to prevent exploitation. Monitoring for plugin updates from the vendor is recommended to apply an official fix once available. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance.
