Technical Analysis

Frappe ERPNext versions prior to 15.121.0 and 16.x prior to 16.34.0 contain a missing authorization vulnerability. Certain API endpoints fail to enforce authorization checks on document status modifications, enabling authenticated users with low privileges to escalate their permissions and modify data beyond their assigned roles. This bypasses intended role-based access restrictions, potentially compromising data integrity within the application.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows authenticated users with limited privileges to perform unauthorized modifications to document statuses. This can lead to unauthorized data changes, violating access control policies and potentially impacting business processes relying on ERPNext data integrity. There is no indication of remote code execution or data disclosure beyond modification of document statuses.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in ERPNext versions 15.121.0 and 16.34.0. Users should upgrade to these or later versions to remediate the missing authorization vulnerability. Since this is not a cloud service, patching the affected software versions is required to mitigate the risk.
