Technical Analysis

Frappe ERPNext versions prior to 15.119.1 and 16.32.0 contain a server-side template injection vulnerability due to improper validation of user-controlled message fields before template rendering. Authenticated attackers with operational privileges can exploit this flaw to execute arbitrary template expressions, enabling them to manipulate database contents, delete documents, perform outbound server requests, and send emails from the affected site.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows authenticated attackers with limited privileges to perform unauthorized actions including reading and modifying arbitrary database data, deleting documents, sending outbound network requests from the server, and sending emails. This can lead to data compromise, data loss, and potential further attacks leveraging the server's capabilities.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in Frappe ERPNext versions 15.119.1 and 16.32.0 and later. Users should upgrade to these versions or later to remediate this vulnerability. No vendor advisory content was provided to indicate alternative mitigations or temporary fixes.
