CVE-2026-110234: Insecure Temporary File in elio-fm elio
Description
Elio versions up to 1.13.0 have an insecure temporary file vulnerability that allows local users to overwrite files owned by other users. This occurs because attackers can pre-create symbolic links at predictable temporary file paths tied to a victim's Elio process ID. When the victim previews media, fonts, or archives, these files may be truncated or overwritten due to the symlink redirection.

Technical Analysis
CVE-2026-110234 describes an insecure temporary file vulnerability in elio-fm's elio software up to version 1.13.0. Local attackers who know the victim's Elio process ID can create symbolic links at predictable temporary file locations. This allows them to cause the victim's preview operations on media, fonts, or archives to overwrite or truncate files owned by the victim, leading to potential data loss or corruption. The vulnerability requires local access and partial user interaction, with low attack complexity and privileges required.
Potential Impact
Local users can overwrite or truncate files owned by other users by exploiting predictable temporary file paths and symbolic link creation. This can result in data loss or corruption of victim-owned files during media preview operations. There is no indication of remote exploitation or privilege escalation beyond the local user context.
Mitigation Recommendations
Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, restrict local user access to trusted individuals and avoid running elio preview operations in multi-user environments where untrusted users have local access.
