Published: 10/14/2026 (10/14/2026, 14:16:39 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: dlbeer
Product: quirc

Description

quirc versions up to 1.2 contain a vulnerability in the find_alignment_pattern() function that allows crafted QR images to cause excessive CPU usage. This occurs when three finder patterns produce a near-degenerate perspective transform, leading to billions of iterations in region_code() and hanging the quirc_end() function. The vulnerability has a medium severity with a CVSS score of 6.8.

Technical Analysis

quirc through version 1.2 has an excessive-iteration vulnerability in the find_alignment_pattern() function located in lib/identify.c. An attacker can craft QR images with three finder patterns arranged to produce a near-degenerate perspective transform. This causes the region_code() function to perform billions of iterations, exhausting CPU resources and causing the quirc_end() function to hang. The vulnerability allows denial of service via CPU exhaustion during QR code decoding.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows an attacker to cause a denial of service by hanging the quirc_end() function through CPU exhaustion. This impacts applications using quirc to decode attacker-supplied QR images, potentially leading to application unavailability or degraded performance.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, avoid processing untrusted QR images with vulnerable versions of quirc.
