Published: 10/14/2026 (10/14/2026, 14:16:43 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: saitoha
Product: libsixel

Description

libsixel versions before 1.8.7-r1 and from 1.9.0 through 1.10.5 contain a heap out-of-bounds write vulnerability in the gif_init_frame() function. This occurs because the function does not verify that the GIF transparent color index is within the bounds of the palette size. An attacker can exploit this by crafting a GIF with a small color table and a large transparent index, which when processed with a background color set, causes heap corruption or crashes.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in libsixel's gif_init_frame() function arises from a missing bounds check on the GIF transparent color index relative to the palette size. Specifically, if a crafted GIF file contains a transparent color index larger than the palette, the function writes beyond the allocated palette buffer on the heap. This heap out-of-bounds write can lead to memory corruption or application crashes. The affected versions are all versions before 1.8.7-r1 and versions from 1.9.0 up to and including 1.10.5.

Potential Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability can cause heap corruption or crashes in applications using vulnerable libsixel versions when processing maliciously crafted GIF images. This may lead to denial of service or potentially other undefined behavior due to memory corruption. No known exploits in the wild have been reported.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a patch is available, avoid processing untrusted GIF images with vulnerable versions of libsixel or apply other application-level mitigations to prevent exposure to crafted GIF files.
