Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: rapidlasso
Product: LASzip

Description

CVE-2026-110603 is a medium severity vulnerability in LASzip up to version 3.5.0. It involves an invalid free of an uninitialized heap pointer in the laszip_read_header() function. An attacker can craft a LAS/LAZ file with an inflated variable length record (VLR) count that triggers a crash and heap corruption when processed via the C API.

Technical Analysis

LASzip versions up to and including 3.5.0 contain a vulnerability in the laszip_read_header() function where an invalid free operation occurs on an uninitialized heap pointer. This happens when a specially crafted LAS/LAZ file with an inflated VLR count is opened and then destroyed through the C API, causing the process to crash and corrupt the heap. The CVSS 4.0 base score is 5.8, indicating medium severity, with an attack vector of local access and requiring user interaction.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation results in a process crash and heap corruption, which can lead to denial of service or potentially destabilize the application using LASzip. There is no indication of code execution or data disclosure. The attack requires local access and user interaction to open a malicious file.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, avoid opening untrusted LAS/LAZ files with LASzip through the C API to prevent triggering the vulnerability.
