Published: 10/14/2026 (10/14/2026, 14:16:44 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Michael R Sweet
Product: Mini-XML

Description

Mini-XML 4.0.0 through 4.0.6 contains an off-by-one stack out-of-bounds write in mxml_strtod() when the locale decimal point is not '.'. Attackers can supply XML with a 63-digit REAL value followed by '.' to write a NUL byte past the 64-byte stack buffer, corrupting stack memory or crashing the process.

Technical Analysis

An off-by-one stack out-of-bounds write exists in Mini-XML versions 4.0.0 through 4.0.6 in the mxml_strtod() function. When the locale decimal point character differs from '.', an attacker can supply XML with a 63-digit REAL value followed by a '.' to cause a NUL byte to be written just past the 64-byte stack buffer. This memory corruption can lead to stack corruption or process crashes. The vulnerability has a CVSS 4.0 score of 2.0, indicating low severity, and requires local access with user interaction.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability can cause stack memory corruption or process crashes when processing specially crafted XML input under certain locale settings. There is no indication of remote exploitation or privilege escalation. The impact is limited to denial of service or potential memory corruption in the affected process.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a patch is available, avoid processing untrusted XML input with Mini-XML under locale settings where the decimal point is not '.'.
