CVE-2026-110640: Improper Neutralization of Special Elements used in an OS Command ('OS Command Injection') in ariym whisper-node
Description
Whisper-node versions up to 1.1.1 contain a critical OS command injection vulnerability. This flaw allows attackers to execute arbitrary commands by manipulating the filePath or whisperOptions.language parameters passed to the whisper() function. The vulnerability arises because these inputs are incorporated into a shell command without proper neutralization, enabling injection of shell metacharacters or command substitutions. Exploitation can lead to command execution with the privileges of the Node.js process running the application.

Technical Analysis
CVE-2026-110640 is an OS command injection vulnerability in ariym's whisper-node software up to version 1.1.1. The vulnerability occurs when user-supplied filePath or whisperOptions.language values are passed to the whisper() function, which internally uses createCppCommand() to build a shell command executed via shelljs exec(). Because the inputs are not properly sanitized, attackers can inject shell metacharacters or $() substitutions to execute arbitrary OS commands with the Node.js process privileges.
Potential Impact
Successful exploitation allows unauthenticated attackers to execute arbitrary operating system commands with the privileges of the Node.js process running whisper-node. This can lead to full system compromise depending on the process privileges, data theft, service disruption, or further attacks within the environment.
Mitigation Recommendations
Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, avoid using untrusted input for the filePath or whisperOptions.language parameters in whisper(). Consider implementing input validation or sandboxing to mitigate risk.
