Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: shahkashani
Product: stills

Description

Stills before 25.24.2 contains an OS command injection vulnerability that allows attackers to execute shell commands by supplying crafted media file paths. Attackers can name a media file with $(...) or backticks to execute operating system commands with Node.js process privileges when ffmpeg, ffprobe, gifsicle, or convert runs.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in shahkashani stills (versions prior to 25.24.2) arises from improper neutralization of special elements used in OS commands. Attackers can exploit this by naming media files with shell command injection payloads (e.g., $(...) or backticks). When the application processes these files using external utilities (ffmpeg, ffprobe, gifsicle, convert), the injected commands execute with the privileges of the Node.js process, potentially leading to full system compromise.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows unauthenticated attackers to execute arbitrary operating system commands with the privileges of the Node.js process running the stills software. This can lead to complete system compromise, data theft, or service disruption. The CVSS 4.0 score of 9.3 reflects the critical severity and the ease of exploitation without user interaction or privileges.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fixed version of shahkashani stills is available starting from version 25.24.2. Users should upgrade to version 25.24.2 or later to remediate this vulnerability. No other mitigation guidance is provided; patching is the recommended action.
