Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: anshulkharb
Product: thumbnail

Description

The thumbnail Python package through 1.5 contains an OS command injection vulnerability in generate_thumbnail() that allows attackers to execute commands by supplying shell metacharacters in file paths. Attackers who control a file name passed to generate_thumbnail, such as an uploaded file, can inject commands into os.system() calls running ffmpeg, convert or unoconv with the Python process privileges.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-110650 is an OS command injection vulnerability in the thumbnail Python package through version 1.5. The generate_thumbnail() function improperly neutralizes special shell characters in file paths, allowing attackers who control file names (e.g., uploaded files) to inject arbitrary commands into os.system() calls. These calls run external utilities such as ffmpeg, convert, or unoconv with the privileges of the Python process, enabling command execution on the host system.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows unauthenticated attackers to execute arbitrary operating system commands with the privileges of the Python process running the thumbnail package. This can lead to full system compromise, data loss, or service disruption. The vulnerability affects confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the affected system.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, avoid passing untrusted file names to generate_thumbnail() or sanitize inputs to remove shell metacharacters before processing. Consider running the thumbnail process with minimal privileges to limit impact.
