CVE-2026-110675: CWE-1286 Improper Validation of Syntactic Correctness of Input
Description
Cpanel::JSON::XS versions from 4.33 before 4.80 for Perl accept malformed UTF-8 in bare hash keys under allow_barekey in decode_hv. With utf8 and allow_barekey, which relaxed enables, a quoted key is validated as UTF-8 but a bare key's bytes are stored as a UTF-8 flagged string without any check. Malformed UTF-8, control bytes and backslashes reach the decoded hash, while malformed UTF-8 and control bytes in a quoted key or a value are rejected. Later operations on the key, including lc, uc or encoding the hash again, die with a malformed UTF-8 error.

Technical Analysis
CVE-2026-110675 is a vulnerability in Cpanel::JSON::XS versions >=4.33 and <4.80 for Perl where the decode_hv function, when used with utf8 and allow_barekey options, improperly validates bare hash keys. While quoted keys are validated as UTF-8, bare keys are stored as UTF-8 flagged strings without validation, allowing malformed UTF-8, control bytes, and backslashes to be included. This leads to errors in subsequent operations such as case conversion or re-encoding of the hash due to malformed UTF-8 sequences.
Potential Impact
The vulnerability causes malformed UTF-8 and control bytes to be accepted in bare hash keys, which can lead to runtime errors or crashes during later processing of these keys. This may disrupt normal application behavior that relies on JSON decoding and manipulation, potentially causing denial of service or data handling issues.
Mitigation Recommendations
Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, avoid using the allow_barekey option with utf8 enabled in affected versions or validate input externally before decoding.
