CVE-2026-110677: CWE-401 Missing Release of Memory after Effective Lifetime
Description
Cpanel::JSON::XS versions from 4.28 before 4.80 for Perl leak the array collecting duplicate key values under dupkeys_as_arrayref in decode_hv. With dupkeys_as_arrayref, the values of a duplicate object key are collected into a new array. An extra reference is never released, so the array and every value in it outlive the decoded structure. The array also leaks when decoding fails after a duplicate key. Repeatedly decoding untrusted JSON with a duplicate key holding a large value exhausts process memory.

Technical Analysis
CVE-2026-110677 affects Cpanel::JSON::XS versions >=4.28 and <4.80. When the dupkeys_as_arrayref option is enabled, duplicate JSON object keys are collected into an array. However, an extra reference to this array is never released, causing the array and its contents to outlive the decoded JSON structure. Additionally, if decoding fails after encountering a duplicate key, the array leaks memory. This behavior results in a memory leak that can exhaust process memory when decoding untrusted JSON with large duplicate key values repeatedly.
Potential Impact
The vulnerability causes a memory leak in affected versions of Cpanel::JSON::XS when decoding JSON with duplicate keys and the dupkeys_as_arrayref option enabled. This can lead to exhaustion of process memory, potentially degrading application performance or causing crashes due to resource depletion. There is no indication of direct code execution or data corruption from the provided information.
Mitigation Recommendations
No official patch or remediation details are provided in the available data. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, avoid decoding untrusted JSON with duplicate keys using the dupkeys_as_arrayref option or limit the size and frequency of such inputs to reduce memory exhaustion risk.
