CVE-2026-110680: CWE-787 Out-of-bounds Write

Source: CVE Database V5

Description

Cpanel::JSON::XS versions from 4.20 before 4.80 for Perl write out of bounds when a tied or shared hash grows during canonical encoding in encode_hv. With canonical, the keys of a tied or threads::shared hash are counted before a second pass collects them for sorting. The encoder uses a fixed 64-entry stack array or, for larger counts, a heap array sized from the first pass. If the second pass exceeds that capacity, entries are written out of bounds before the counts are compared. This corrupts stack or heap memory and can crash the process.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-110680 affects Cpanel::JSON::XS versions >=4.20 and <4.80. The vulnerability arises in the encode_hv function when encoding tied or threads::shared hashes with the canonical option enabled. The encoder first counts keys using a fixed-size stack array or a heap array sized from the first pass. If the hash grows during the second pass, the encoder writes beyond the allocated array bounds, corrupting stack or heap memory and causing process crashes.

Potential Impact

The out-of-bounds write can corrupt memory, leading to process crashes. There is no information about exploitation in the wild or further impact such as code execution.

Mitigation Recommendations

No patch or official fix information is provided. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, avoid using the canonical encoding option with tied or shared hashes in affected versions.
