Technical Analysis

This vulnerability in TotalAV involves a path traversal flaw (CWE-22) that permits a local attacker to manipulate the IPC authentication token by loading a malicious IPC.dll. By exploiting this, the attacker can abuse the SYSTEM service component of TotalAV to execute arbitrary code with SYSTEM-level privileges, resulting in local privilege escalation. The affected versions are from 0 through 7.1.17 inclusive. There is no CVSS score available, and no vendor advisory or patch information is provided.

Potential Impact

An unprivileged local user can escalate privileges to NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM by exploiting this vulnerability, potentially gaining full control over the affected system. This could allow execution of arbitrary code with the highest system privileges, leading to complete compromise of the host.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, restrict local user access to trusted users only and monitor for suspicious local activity related to TotalAV services.
