Source: CVE Database V5

Description

Text::CSV_XS versions from 1.46 up to but not including 1.65 for Perl contain a use-after-free vulnerability in the handling of bind_columns variables when skip_empty_rows skips an empty line in getline. This occurs because the parser frees a scalar variable still referenced by the application, leading to use of freed memory and potential process crashes.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in Text::CSV_XS (>=1.46 <1.65) involves a use-after-free condition related to the bind_columns feature. When skip_empty_rows is enabled and an empty line is skipped during getline, the parser frees the current field scalar without verifying if it is bound to an application variable. This causes the application to hold a reference to freed memory, which can lead to crashes or undefined behavior when accessed later. The issue also occurs in "eof" mode on any empty line. This is classified under CWE-416 (Use After Free) and CWE-911.

Potential Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability can cause the application using Text::CSV_XS to crash due to use of freed memory. There is no indication of code execution or data corruption beyond process instability. No known exploits are reported in the wild.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, avoid using skip_empty_rows or "eof" mode with bind_columns on affected versions. Monitor for vendor updates and apply official patches once released.
