Description

Text::CSV_XS versions before 1.65 for Perl contain a memory leak vulnerability where parsed fields from malformed CSV records are not freed after a parse failure in the getline function. This causes memory exhaustion in long-running processes handling repeated malformed input.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in Text::CSV_XS affects versions prior to 1.65. When the getline method attempts to parse a CSV record, it collects fields into a new array and returns a reference only if parsing succeeds. If the record contains syntax errors, getline returns undef but fails to free the allocated array and its fields. This results in a memory leak, causing long-running processes that parse untrusted CSV data to retain memory for every malformed record, potentially leading to memory exhaustion.

Potential Impact

Processes using vulnerable versions of Text::CSV_XS to parse untrusted CSV input may experience memory exhaustion due to the accumulation of leaked memory from malformed records. This can degrade performance or cause denial of service by exhausting available memory.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or fix is currently documented in the provided data. Users should monitor the vendor advisory for updates. Until a fix is available, avoid processing untrusted malformed CSV input or implement external memory management controls to mitigate memory exhaustion risks.
