Published: 10/15/2026 (10/15/2026, 18:57:46 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: EarthScope
Product: libmseed

Description

EarthScope libmseed through 3.5.4 contains a heap out-of-bounds read vulnerability in ms3_detect() in parseutils.c that reads past truncated miniSEED 2 record buffers. Attackers can supply a 40 to 47 byte buffer passing MS2_ISVALIDHEADER to msr3_parse() or ms3_detect(), over-reading up to 8 bytes and potentially crashing the process.

Technical Analysis

EarthScope libmseed through version 3.5.4 contains a heap out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the ms3_detect() function located in parseutils.c. The vulnerability arises when processing truncated miniSEED 2 record buffers, allowing an attacker to supply a specially crafted 40 to 47 byte buffer that passes the MS2_ISVALIDHEADER check to msr3_parse() or ms3_detect(). This results in reading up to 8 bytes beyond the allocated buffer, which can lead to a crash of the affected process.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability can cause a denial of service by crashing the process handling the malformed miniSEED 2 record buffer. There is no indication of code execution or data corruption beyond the out-of-bounds read. The attack requires local access (AV:L) and user interaction (UI:P), with no privileges required (PR:N).

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available for this vulnerability. Users should upgrade libmseed to a version later than 3.5.4 where this issue is fixed. Since this is a cloud service, the vendor manages remediation for the cloud-hosted service; users should verify with the vendor advisory for confirmation of patch deployment.
