Published: 10/15/2026 (10/15/2026, 18:46:21 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Netgate
Product: pfSense CE

Description

CVE-2026-111221 is a configuration injection vulnerability in Netgate pfSense CE up to version 2.9.0. Authenticated users with L2TP or PPPoE Server edit privileges can inject commands by submitting an unescaped RADIUS shared secret containing special characters. This allows execution of arbitrary commands as root when a session starts, due to improper neutralization of CRLF sequences.

Technical Analysis

Netgate pfSense CE versions up to 2.9.0 contain a CRLF injection vulnerability in the WebGUI. Authenticated users with L2TP or PPPoE Server edit privileges can exploit this by posting a crafted RADIUS shared secret with a quote and newline to vpn_l2tp.php or services_pppoe_edit.php. This input is not properly escaped, allowing injection of mpd5 commands that execute as root upon session initiation.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows an authenticated user with specific privileges to execute arbitrary commands as root on the pfSense system. This can lead to full system compromise, unauthorized configuration changes, and potential disruption of VPN services.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, restrict L2TP and PPPoE Server edit privileges to trusted administrators only and carefully validate inputs if possible.
