Published: 10/15/2026 (10/15/2026, 18:46:30 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Netgate
Product: pfSense CE

Description

Netgate pfSense CE through 2.9.0 contains a local file read vulnerability that allows users with the Dynamic DNS client privilege to read files as root by setting a file:// custom Update URL in services_dyndns_edit.php. Attackers can set a non-matching Result Match string so _checkStatus() logs file contents such as /conf/config.xml or /etc/master.passwd to the system log.

Technical Analysis

Netgate pfSense CE versions up to 2.9.0 contain a vulnerability where users with Dynamic DNS client privileges can exploit the services_dyndns_edit.php interface by setting a file:// custom Update URL. By manipulating the Result Match string, the _checkStatus() function logs the contents of arbitrary files with root privileges to the system log, enabling local file disclosure.

Potential Impact

An attacker with Dynamic DNS client privileges can read sensitive system files as root, potentially exposing configuration data and password files. This could lead to further system compromise if the disclosed information is leveraged.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, restrict Dynamic DNS client privileges to trusted users only and monitor for suspicious use of file:// URLs in Dynamic DNS settings.
