Published: 10/16/2026 (10/16/2026, 17:39:27 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: safing
Product: portmaster

Description

Safing Portmaster versions before 2.2.5 have a missing authorization vulnerability in the update mechanism. Unprivileged local processes can invoke the POST /api/v1/updates/from-url endpoint without proper authentication, allowing attackers to force updates using attacker-controlled URLs. This can lead to installation of older Safing-signed releases that contain previously fixed vulnerabilities.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-111664 describes a missing authentication vulnerability in Safing Portmaster prior to version 2.2.5. The vulnerability exists because the POST /api/v1/updates/from-url endpoint is registered with api.PermitAnyone, allowing unprivileged local processes to trigger updates without authorization. Attackers can supply a malicious index URL that bypasses version checks and auto-apply settings, causing the software to install older signed releases that may reintroduce fixed security issues.

Potential Impact

An attacker with local unprivileged access can exploit this vulnerability to downgrade the software to older versions containing known vulnerabilities. This could potentially allow exploitation of previously patched security flaws, increasing the attack surface and risk on the affected system. The CVSS 4.0 base score is 4.8 (medium severity), reflecting local attack vector with low complexity and no user interaction required.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in Safing Portmaster version 2.2.5 and later. Users should upgrade to version 2.2.5 or newer to remediate this vulnerability. No other mitigations are indicated by the vendor advisory.
