CVE-2026-111802: Improper Link Resolution Before File Access ('Link Following') in Red Hat Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10
Description
CVE-2026-111802 is a medium severity vulnerability in Nautilus on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10. It involves improper verification of symbolic links when prompting users to empty the trash after unmounting or ejecting removable drives or disk images. Technical Analysis
The vulnerability in Nautilus occurs because it does not verify whether trash directory paths are symbolic links before prompting the user to empty the trash upon unmounting or ejecting removable media. This improper link resolution can be exploited by an attacker who convinces a user to mount a specially crafted storage volume and accept the prompt to empty the trash, causing arbitrary deletion of files the user can access.
Potential Impact
Successful exploitation leads to arbitrary deletion of files accessible to the user, impacting integrity and availability. There is no confidentiality impact reported. The CVSS 3.1 score is 6.6 (medium), reflecting local attack vector, low complexity, required privileges, user interaction, and high impact on integrity and availability.
Mitigation Recommendations
Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the Red Hat advisory at https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-111802 for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is applied, users should be cautious when mounting removable media and responding to prompts to empty the trash, especially from untrusted sources.
