CVE-2026-111885: Insufficient Granularity of Access Control in thorsten phpMyFAQ
Description
phpMyFAQ versions from 4.2.0-alpha up to but not including 4.2.0-beta contain an authorization vulnerability in the GroupController::deleteGroup() function. This flaw allows authenticated administrators with GROUP_DELETE privileges, but who are not SuperAdmins, to delete higher-privileged groups by sending a crafted groupId to the /admin/api/group/delete endpoint. This results in permanent destruction of groups and removal of members' inherited rights.

Technical Analysis
The vulnerability in phpMyFAQ (versions >=4.2.0-alpha <4.2.0-beta) is due to insufficient granularity in access control within the GroupController::deleteGroup() method. Specifically, the function fails to enforce privilege-level checks on target groups, allowing authenticated administrators with GROUP_DELETE permission but lacking SuperAdmin status to delete groups with higher privileges. Exploiting this flaw involves sending a crafted groupId to the /admin/api/group/delete API endpoint, which leads to permanent deletion of those groups and strips users of inherited access rights.
Potential Impact
An attacker with authenticated administrator access and GROUP_DELETE privileges can permanently delete higher-privileged groups, disrupting group-based access controls and removing inherited permissions from members. This could lead to denial of service for legitimate users relying on those groups and potential privilege management issues within the application.
Mitigation Recommendations
Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, restrict GROUP_DELETE privileges to trusted SuperAdmin-level users only to minimize risk.
