Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-111892 describes an improper restriction of excessive authentication attempts in phpMyFAQ, specifically versions >=4.2.0-alpha and <4.2.0-beta. The vulnerability affects the unauthenticated user/password/update and user/password/reset endpoints, allowing attackers to send unlimited password reset requests. This can lead to denial of service conditions by overwhelming the mail system and server resources with reset emails.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows unauthenticated attackers to flood a registered user's email inbox with password reset emails, which can exhaust mailer and server resources. This may degrade service availability and disrupt legitimate password reset processes.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, consider implementing external rate limiting or monitoring to mitigate excessive password reset requests.
