Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: thorsten
Product: phpMyFAQ

Description

phpMyFAQ versions from 4.2.0-alpha up to but not including 4.2.0-beta contain a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the SvgSanitizer component. This flaw allows FAQ editors to store executable SVG files by exploiting how script tags can be split around removed tokens, leading to script execution in the application's origin when the file is viewed.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in phpMyFAQ's SvgSanitizer component affects versions >=4.2.0-alpha and <4.2.0-beta. It is a stored cross-site scripting issue where attackers can craft SVG files with script tags split around tokens removed by the sanitizer, such as processing instructions. This bypass allows the reassembly of executable script code during a single-pass removal process, resulting in script execution in the context of the application when a victim opens the malicious SVG file.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation enables an attacker with FAQ editor privileges to store malicious SVG content that executes scripts in the application's origin. This can lead to cross-site scripting attacks affecting users who view the stored SVG, potentially compromising user sessions or performing unauthorized actions within the application context.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, restrict FAQ editor privileges to trusted users and avoid opening SVG files from untrusted sources within the application.
