Published: 10/17/2026 (10/17/2026, 21:31:18 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: thorsten
Product: phpMyFAQ

Description

phpMyFAQ versions from 4.2.0-alpha up to but not including 4.2.0-beta contain a vulnerability that allows unauthenticated attackers to cause uncontrolled resource consumption via the faqs and search API endpoints. By sending concurrent GET requests, attackers can force the server to load and process all database records into PHP memory, leading to CPU and memory exhaustion and potentially crashing the server.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-111901 describes an uncontrolled resource consumption vulnerability in phpMyFAQ affecting versions >=4.2.0-alpha and <4.2.0-beta. The flaw exists in unauthenticated access to the faqs and search API endpoints, where attackers can send multiple concurrent GET requests. These requests cause the server to load and process the entire database into PHP memory, exhausting CPU and memory resources and resulting in a denial of service condition.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation can lead to denial of service by exhausting server CPU and memory resources, causing the phpMyFAQ service to crash or become unresponsive. No authentication is required to trigger this resource exhaustion, increasing the risk of attack.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, consider restricting access to the vulnerable API endpoints or implementing rate limiting to mitigate the risk of resource exhaustion attacks.
