CVE-2026-111905: Authorization Bypass Through User-Controlled Key in thorsten phpMyFAQ
Description
phpMyFAQ versions 3.2.0 before 4.1.9 and 4.2.0-alpha before 4.2.0-beta contain an authorization bypass vulnerability. The GET /admin/api/user/data/{userId} endpoint allows delegated administrators with user-management rights to access any user's full faquserdata row, including the live TOTP secret, without proper SuperAdmin or protected-target checks. This enables them to generate valid two-factor authentication codes and bypass 2FA protections.

Technical Analysis
CVE-2026-111905 is an insecure direct object reference vulnerability in phpMyFAQ affecting versions >=3.2.0 <4.1.9 and >=4.2.0-alpha <4.2.0-beta. The vulnerability exists in the GET /admin/api/user/data/{userId} API endpoint, which returns sensitive user data including the live TOTP secret without verifying if the requesting delegated administrator has sufficient privileges over the target user. As a result, delegated administrators with user-management rights can retrieve a SuperAdmin's TOTP secret and generate valid two-factor authentication codes, effectively bypassing 2FA protections.
Potential Impact
Delegated administrators with user-management rights can bypass two-factor authentication by retrieving the live TOTP secrets of SuperAdmin users. This compromises the integrity of the authentication system, allowing unauthorized access to high-privilege accounts despite 2FA being enabled.
Mitigation Recommendations
Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, restrict delegated administrator privileges carefully and monitor access to the affected API endpoint to prevent unauthorized retrieval of TOTP secrets.
