Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: strophe
Product: libstrophe

Description

libstrophe versions up to 0.14.0 have a stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability in the SCRAM_Hi function. This occurs when a malicious XMPP server sends a server-first-message with an s= attribute that decodes to more than 124 bytes, overflowing a 128-byte stack buffer. This can cause the client to abort or overwrite stack memory in NDEBUG builds. The vulnerability has a CVSS 4.0 score of 6.0, indicating medium severity.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-112063 is a stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability in libstrophe through version 0.14.0. The flaw exists in the SCRAM_Hi function, where the client processes the server-first-message during SCRAM authentication. If the s= attribute (SCRAM salt) decodes to more than 124 bytes, it overflows a 128-byte stack buffer, potentially causing client crashes or stack memory corruption in builds compiled with NDEBUG. The vulnerability requires interaction with a malicious XMPP server and user interaction (UI:P).

Potential Impact

An attacker controlling an XMPP server can send a specially crafted server-first-message with an oversized SCRAM salt to trigger a stack-based buffer overflow in the client. This can cause the client application to abort or overwrite stack memory, potentially leading to denial of service or undefined behavior. There is no indication of remote code execution or privilege escalation from the provided data.

Mitigation Recommendations

No vendor advisory or patch information is provided. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, avoid connecting libstrophe clients to untrusted XMPP servers or those that could send malicious SCRAM salts.
