Published: 10/19/2026 (10/19/2026, 08:19:20 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Mobatek
Product: MobaXterm

Description

MobaXterm Personal Edition (Portable) 26.4 GA has a vulnerability where it extracts the CygUtils64.plugin file without verifying its integrity. A local attacker with write permissions on this plugin file can replace the contained 'bin/cygwin1.dll' library with a malicious version. When the victim opens a Local Shell session or uses a Cygwin-based function, the tampered library is loaded and executed with the victim's permissions. This vulnerability does not escalate privileges but requires local write access to the plugin file.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-112161 describes an insufficient verification of data authenticity (CWE-345) in MobaXterm Personal Edition (Portable) 26.4 GA. The application extracts the CygUtils64.plugin file without integrity checks, allowing a local attacker with write permissions to replace the 'bin/cygwin1.dll' library inside it with a malicious library. Upon opening a Local Shell session or using Cygwin-based functions, the application loads the tampered library, executing arbitrary code with the victim's permissions. Exploitation requires local write access to the plugin file and does not inherently provide privilege escalation.

Potential Impact

An attacker with local write access to the CygUtils64.plugin file can execute arbitrary code with the victim user's permissions when the victim uses affected MobaXterm functions. There is no privilege escalation involved, but this can lead to code execution within the context of the victim user, potentially compromising their environment.

Mitigation Recommendations

No patch or official fix information is currently available. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, restrict write permissions on the CygUtils64.plugin file to trusted users only to prevent tampering.
