CVE-2026-112257: Stack-based Buffer Overflow in Red Hat Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10
Description
CVE-2026-112257 is a high severity vulnerability in GIMP affecting Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10. The flaw involves the PSD thumbnail resource loader performing a BGR-to-RGB channel swap without verifying the JPEG thumbnail color format. A crafted grayscale PSD thumbnail can trigger a heap out-of-bounds read and write, potentially causing a crash or arbitrary code execution when the file is opened or browsed.

Technical Analysis
This vulnerability arises from improper handling of PSD thumbnail images in GIMP's PSD thumbnail resource loader. Specifically, the loader swaps color channels assuming a fixed 3-byte stride and that the JPEG thumbnail is RGB. When a crafted grayscale PSD thumbnail is processed, this assumption leads to heap out-of-bounds read and write operations in the plug-in process. The flaw can cause application crashes and may allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code in the context of the user opening or browsing the malicious file.
Potential Impact
Successful exploitation can lead to a crash of the GIMP application and potentially arbitrary code execution with the privileges of the user running the application. This poses a high confidentiality, integrity, and availability risk as indicated by the CVSS vector (C:H/I:H/A:H).
Mitigation Recommendations
Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the Red Hat advisory at https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-112257 for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is applied, users should avoid opening or browsing untrusted PSD files with GIMP.
