Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: nkoriyama
Product: aribb24

Description

libaribb24 (aribb24) through 1.0.3 contains a heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability in src/parser.c that allows attackers to corrupt heap memory via an oversized caption data unit. Attackers can supply a crafted caption PES packet in a media file or broadcast stream, processed through arib_parse_pes(), to crash FFmpeg or VLC and possibly corrupt further memory.

Technical Analysis

libaribb24 (aribb24) versions up to and including 1.0.3 contain a heap-based buffer overflow in src/parser.c. The vulnerability is triggered when an attacker supplies a specially crafted caption PES packet with an oversized caption data unit, which is processed by the arib_parse_pes() function. This can corrupt heap memory, potentially causing application crashes and further memory corruption in software like FFmpeg or VLC that use this library.

Potential Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability can lead to application crashes (denial of service) and potential memory corruption, which might be leveraged for further attacks. The CVSS 4.0 score of 6.9 indicates a medium severity impact with local attack vector, low attack complexity, no privileges required, and user interaction needed.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. No official fix or patch links are provided in the available data. Users should monitor vendor communications for updates and avoid processing untrusted media files or streams containing caption PES packets until a fix is available.
