Published: 10/19/2026 (10/19/2026, 21:02:15 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: python-pillow
Product: Pillow

Description

A use-after-free vulnerability exists in the Pillow Python imaging library versions 11.3.0 up to but not including 13.0.0. The flaw occurs when libtiff rejects a TIFF tag during encoding to an in-memory buffer, leading to a heap use-after-free condition. This can cause a process crash and potentially enable code execution. The issue is fixed in Pillow version 13.0.0.

Technical Analysis

Pillow versions from 11.3.0 to before 13.0.0 contain a heap use-after-free vulnerability triggered when libtiff rejects a tag during TIFF encoding to a BytesIO buffer. The error path frees the output buffer without properly closing or clearing the TIFF handle, causing subsequent cleanup to operate on freed memory. This can lead to application crashes and may allow remote code execution if attacker-controlled TIFF tags are processed. The vulnerability is addressed in version 13.0.0.

Potential Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability can cause application crashes (denial of service) and may allow remote code execution due to use-after-free memory corruption when processing malicious TIFF images. There are no known exploits in the wild at this time.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade to Pillow version 13.0.0 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. No other mitigation is indicated by the vendor advisory.
