Published: 10/19/2026 (10/19/2026, 21:12:37 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: python-pillow
Product: Pillow

Description

A vulnerability in the Python Pillow imaging library versions 9.2.0 through 12.x allows uncontrolled resource consumption due to retained rejected GIF frame sizes after a decompression-bomb exception. This can cause memory exhaustion and denial of service if an application catches the exception and continues processing the same image object. The issue is fixed in version 13.0.0.

Technical Analysis

Pillow versions from 9.2.0 up to but not including 13.0.0 have a flaw in GifImageFile._seek where a crafted GIF file can trigger a decompression-bomb exception but leave the rejected frame dimensions stored. If the application catches Image.DecompressionBombError and continues to use the same image object, subsequent seek or load operations allocate memory based on these rejected dimensions, potentially exhausting memory and causing denial of service. This vulnerability is addressed in Pillow 13.0.0.

Potential Impact

An attacker can craft a malicious GIF image that triggers a decompression-bomb exception but causes the application to allocate excessive memory when continuing to process the same image object. This leads to uncontrolled resource consumption and denial of service conditions in affected applications using vulnerable Pillow versions.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade to Pillow version 13.0.0 or later, where this issue is fixed. No other mitigations are specified. Patch status is confirmed fixed in version 13.0.0.
