Published: 10/19/2026 (10/19/2026, 21:27:56 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: python-pillow
Product: Pillow

Description

A buffer over-read vulnerability exists in the python-pillow Pillow library versions 8.1.0 through 12.x, fixed in 13.0.0. The flaw occurs in TIFF tile and RGBA decode paths where Pillow can read beyond the row data produced by libtiff due to inconsistent interpretation of TIFF tags. This can lead to exposure of adjacent heap memory or application crashes when processing crafted TIFF images.

Technical Analysis

Pillow, a Python imaging library, has a buffer over-read vulnerability (CWE-126) affecting versions from 8.1.0 up to but not including 13.0.0. The issue arises in the TIFF tile and RGBA decode paths where Pillow and libtiff interpret duplicated PhotometricInterpretation or BitsPerSample tags differently. Pillow fails to verify that the input row fits within the row data produced by libtiff, unlike the strip path which has this validation. This can cause Pillow to read beyond the allocated buffer, potentially exposing adjacent heap data in output pixels or causing a crash. The vulnerability is addressed in version 13.0.0.

Potential Impact

An attacker can craft a malicious TIFF image that triggers out-of-bounds reads in Pillow's decoding routines, potentially exposing adjacent heap memory contents in the output pixels or causing the application to crash. This could lead to information disclosure or denial of service. The CVSS 4.0 score is 8.8 (high severity), indicating a significant risk if unpatched.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade to Pillow version 13.0.0 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. No other mitigations are indicated by the vendor advisory. Patch status is confirmed fixed in 13.0.0.
