Published: 10/19/2026 (10/19/2026, 21:35:25 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: python-pillow
Product: Pillow

Description

Pillow, a Python imaging library, has a vulnerability in its MSP RLE decoder from versions 4.1.0 up to but not including 13.0.0. The decoder can expand a small crafted MSP image into an unbounded in-memory buffer, potentially exhausting system memory and causing a denial of service. This occurs because the decoder writes run-length output to BytesIO without limiting expansion to the declared image size, bypassing decompression-bomb checks. The issue is fixed in version 13.0.0.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-112892 describes an improper handling of highly compressed MSP image data in the Pillow library's MSP RLE decoder. From versions 4.1.0 to before 13.0.0, the decoder does not limit the expansion of run-length encoded data to the declared image size, allowing an attacker to supply a crafted MSP image that expands into an unbounded in-memory buffer. This can exhaust memory resources and cause a denial of service in applications loading such images. The vulnerability is classified under CWE-409 (Improper Handling of Highly Compressed Data). The issue is resolved in Pillow version 13.0.0.

Potential Impact

An attacker can cause a denial of service by supplying a crafted MSP image that triggers excessive memory consumption during decoding. This can exhaust system memory even if the image passes decompression-bomb checks, potentially crashing or severely degrading the availability of applications using vulnerable Pillow versions.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade Pillow to version 13.0.0 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. No other mitigation is indicated or required according to the available data.
