Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: apostrophecms
Product: apostrophe

Description

ApostropheCMS is an open-source Node.js content management system. Prior to 4.34.0, a project-defined free-form widget style field can carry an editor-controlled quote into an inline style attribute because the wrapper serializer does not apply HTML-attribute encoding. The quote can terminate the style attribute and inject executable attributes when published content, or an affected draft viewed by a higher-privileged user, is rendered. This issue is fixed in version 4.34.0.

Technical Analysis

ApostropheCMS, an open-source Node.js content management system, has a CWE-79 cross-site scripting vulnerability in versions before 4.34.0. The vulnerability arises because a project-defined free-form widget style field can include editor-controlled quotes that are not properly HTML-attribute encoded by the wrapper serializer. This flaw allows an attacker to terminate the inline style attribute and inject executable attributes when the content is rendered, either in published content or drafts viewed by users with higher privileges. The vulnerability is fixed in version 4.34.0.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation can lead to limited confidentiality and integrity impacts via cross-site scripting, potentially allowing attackers to execute arbitrary scripts in the context of the affected user's browser. The vulnerability requires at least low privileges and user interaction, and does not affect availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade ApostropheCMS to version 4.34.0 or later, where this vulnerability has been fixed. No other specific mitigations are indicated by the vendor advisory.
