Technical Analysis
This vulnerability affects the DrayTek Vigor2960 router running firmware version 1.5.1.6 Revision 8218. The flaw exists in the commonupload component, specifically in the handling of the /cgi-bin/mainfunction.cgi endpoint. By manipulating the upload_path and upload_name parameters, an attacker can perform unrestricted file uploads remotely. This could potentially allow unauthorized files to be uploaded to the device. The vendor has fixed the issue in version 1.5.1.7. However, the product is end-of-support, and only major security issues are reviewed going forward.
Potential Impact
Successful exploitation allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to upload arbitrary files to the device, potentially leading to further compromise depending on the uploaded content and device configuration. The CVSS 4.0 base score is 5.3 (medium), reflecting network attack vector, low complexity, no user interaction, and limited confidentiality, integrity, and availability impacts.
Mitigation Recommendations
Upgrade to DrayTek Vigor2960 firmware version 1.5.1.7, which addresses this unrestricted upload vulnerability. Note that the product is end-of-support with limited vendor maintenance, so upgrading is strongly recommended to mitigate this issue. If upgrading is not possible, restrict network access to the device's management interface to trusted users only.
