Description

CVE-2026-113790 is a vulnerability in the pypdf library prior to version 6.21.0 where an attacker can craft a PDF with large arrays or dictionaries, causing excessive memory consumption during parsing. This uncontrolled resource consumption can lead to denial of service conditions. The issue is fixed in version 6.21.0.

Technical Analysis

The pypdf library, a pure-python PDF processing tool, suffers from an uncontrolled resource consumption vulnerability (CWE-400) in versions before 6.21.0. An attacker can create a malicious PDF containing arrays or dictionaries with a large number of elements, which causes the parser to consume excessive memory resources. This flaw can degrade system performance or cause denial of service. The vulnerability has been addressed and fixed in pypdf version 6.21.0.

Potential Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability can cause the pypdf parser to consume large amounts of memory, potentially leading to denial of service by exhausting system resources. There is no indication of code execution or data disclosure. The CVSS 4.0 score of 6.0 reflects a medium severity impact primarily due to resource exhaustion.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade to pypdf version 6.21.0 or later, where this vulnerability has been fixed. No other specific mitigations are indicated.
