Published: 10/22/2026 (10/22/2026, 16:25:32 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: rthalley
Product: dnspython

Description

dnspython versions prior to 2.9.0 contain an uncontrolled recursion vulnerability in the dns.name.from_wire_parser function. This function follows DNS compression pointer chains without a hop limit, allowing a malicious DNS message to cause excessive pointer traversal. This can lead to high CPU usage, application degradation, or denial of service. The issue is fixed in dnspython version 2.9.0.

Technical Analysis

The dnspython DNS toolkit for Python has a vulnerability (CWE-674) in versions before 2.9.0 where the dns.name.from_wire_parser function processes attacker-controlled DNS compression pointer chains without limiting recursion depth. This lack of a hop limit allows crafted DNS wire-format messages to trigger excessive pointer traversal during name decompression, resulting in high CPU consumption and potential denial of service in applications that handle untrusted DNS messages. The vulnerability is addressed in version 2.9.0.

Potential Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability can cause high CPU usage and degrade application performance or cause denial of service in applications using vulnerable dnspython versions to process untrusted DNS messages. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity reported.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade dnspython to version 2.9.0 or later, where this uncontrolled recursion vulnerability has been fixed. No other mitigation is indicated by the vendor advisory.
