Product: Webmail

Description

CVE-2026-114723 is a low-severity vulnerability in Roundcube Webmail before versions 1.6.20 and 1.7.5. It allows bypassing of ImageMagick resource limits during thumbnail generation when the system falls back to using GD for image processing on non-Windows platforms. This can lead to server memory exhaustion due to lack of resource limits on crafted large images. The issue was fixed by applying memory checks uniformly across all platforms.

Technical Analysis

Roundcube Webmail versions prior to 1.6.20 and 1.7.5 contain a resource exhaustion vulnerability (CWE-770) in the image thumbnail generation process. When the ImageMagick library resource limits are bypassed, and the fallback to GD image processing occurs, the memory check was only enforced on Windows platforms. On other platforms, a crafted image with large dimensions could be processed without memory limits, potentially exhausting server memory. The upstream fix ensures that memory checks are applied consistently on all platforms during GD fallback.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability can cause denial of service by exhausting server memory during thumbnail generation of crafted images. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity. The CVSS score of 3.7 reflects a low severity with network attack vector, high attack complexity, no privileges required, no user interaction, and only availability impact.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in Roundcube Webmail versions 1.6.20 and 1.7.5 and later, which applies memory checks on all platforms during GD fallback in thumbnail generation. Users should upgrade to these fixed versions to remediate the issue.
