Description

CVE-2026-115207 is a path traversal vulnerability in GNU patch on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10. It allows an attacker to create arbitrary files outside the intended directory by using specially crafted patch files with absolute paths. This occurs due to missing validation during automatic patch reversal, enabling file creation with the executing user's permissions. The vulnerability has a medium severity rating with a CVSS score of 5.5.

Technical Analysis

A flaw in GNU patch on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 allows arbitrary file creation outside the working directory. The issue arises because absolute file paths in patch headers are accepted during automatic patch reversal without proper validation. An attacker can exploit this by tricking a user or automated workflow into applying a malicious patch file, resulting in files being created in arbitrary locations with the permissions of the user executing the patch utility.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability enables an attacker to create files arbitrarily on the system with the permissions of the user running the patch command. This can lead to unauthorized file creation and potential integrity issues. There is no direct confidentiality or availability impact stated. No known exploits in the wild have been reported.
