Product: libyang

Description

CVE-2026-115327 is a medium severity vulnerability in CESNET libyang up to version 6.4.13. It involves an uninitialized pointer free in the function lydxml_env_netconf_rpc() when parsing NETCONF RPC action envelopes. An attacker with a NETCONF session can send crafted action elements containing non-whitespace text to cause server crashes or heap corruption in affected software such as netopeer2.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in libyang versions up to 6.4.13 is due to an uninitialized pointer free in the lydxml_env_netconf_rpc() function within src/parser_xml.c. This occurs during the parsing of NETCONF RPC action envelopes. Specifically, peers with an active NETCONF session can send an action element containing non-whitespace text via lyd_parse_op(), triggering a crash or heap corruption. This affects servers relying on libyang, including netopeer2.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation can cause denial of service by crashing the server or potentially corrupt the heap, which may lead to undefined behavior or further security issues. The attack requires a NETCONF session with at least low privileges and partial attack complexity due to the need to send crafted RPC action envelopes.

Mitigation Recommendations

No patch or official fix information is provided in the available data. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, restrict NETCONF session access to trusted peers and monitor for abnormal crashes or heap corruption symptoms.
