Vendor/Project: lxc
Product: incus

Description

CVE-2026-115377 is a critical arbitrary file write vulnerability in the Incus container management software (lxc). It affects versions before 6.0.7, versions from 6.1.0 up to but not including 7.0.2, and versions from 7.1.0 up to but not including 7.5.0. The flaw allows malicious migration sources to write files on the host system by planting symbolic links in transferred volumes during migration. This can lead to full host compromise if exploited.

Technical Analysis

Incus versions prior to 6.0.7, between 6.1.0 and 7.0.2, and between 7.1.0 and 7.5.0 contain an arbitrary file write vulnerability due to improper link resolution before file access (link following). Attackers can craft rsync or btrfs receive streams containing symbolic links such as 'rootfs' pointing to the host root filesystem. When these streams are processed during container migration, files can be written as root on the host, enabling full host compromise.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows an attacker controlling a migration source to write arbitrary files on the host system with root privileges. This can lead to complete host compromise, including unauthorized code execution and system takeover.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in Incus versions 6.0.7, 7.0.2, and 7.5.0 and later. Users should upgrade to these or newer versions to remediate the vulnerability. No additional mitigation steps are indicated in the provided data.
